Screen capture software, Presentation Software – Articulate, Camtasia, Snag-It

I am having trouble selecting the right screen capture software for my needs. I want to create informative and compelling tutorials, so I need the right tools. There are a lot of screen capture, e-learning, LMS and Powerpoint to Flash converters out there – it is a niche market jungle and I have just opened the lid on it.

So these are my findings so far. I really like the software offered by the people at Articulate

Here is a summary of what I think I think so far

Articulate
Really like Articulate Presenter, especially for the presentation panels it offers. It makes the finished product look very professional. And the idea of Articulate Engage is good too – to liven up the presentation – but would I really find many uses for it? I don’t know yet. I don’t have a use of Articulate Quizmaker so the Studio bundled version of the product is an overkill for me. What I wanted was Articulate Presenter with Articulate Online. But then I discovered that Articulate Online does not allow me to programmatically add users (people) on the fly. This is severely limiting for the use I have in mind. The other problem is that Articulate Presenter is on version 5 now and really version 6 looks imminent. If I buy 5 now I’ll end up having to upgrade in a couple of months.

Camtasia Studio
This is a fully fledged screen recording product which comes highly recommended. But as far as I can see from the demo version, it does not have a point and click solution to provide the presenter panel as in Articulate Presenter. I am not a flash developer so I need something easy. And do I really need to capture movement on the screen. I think I can do without that for now.

Snag-It
This is the gold standard screen capture product – it is a glorified print-screen, but much better of course. It makes screen capture very simple, and as a time-saver I could use it – although many of its extra features are duplicated in other software I will need.

Increditools – Flash Demo Builder and PPT to Flash Studio
PPT to Flash Studio has the nice presenter panel/player that I like – in fact it looks like a copy of the Articulate player. I wonder which came first. Anyway – although the tool is much cheaper the website does not appear to have much support in evidence. I have submitted a question to them and have not heard back yet. Also the demo builder software, when playing back screen capture, didn’t play back properly with a lot of the captured screen coming out black. This wasn’t a good sign.

Conclusion
Ideally I would use

  • Snag-It
  • Articulate Presenter
  • Articualate Engage
  • Articulate Quizmaker

I would wait until the web site has a number of paying customers before I get into using an LMS – and if I do I would prefer a simple one like Articulate Online. By then, they may have figured out the real-time programmatic user add function that I need. For now, I will stay away from screen recording until I find my presentation feet.

  1. Kevin – Thanks very much. But . . . I wrote this post almost 3 years ago (the date is at the top under the title). I have long since worked out how to use all the tools. You should set yourself up with a Google Alert do that you get timely info about what people need.
